Terps' Dominant Defense Leads the Way to Triumph

College Park, MD - The Maryland Terrapins football team opened their 2024 season with an impressive 27-13 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, September 14th. The Terps' defense led the way, holding the Cavaliers to just 13 points and forcing three turnovers.

Maryland's offense started slowly, but eventually found its rhythm. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. threw for 225 yards and a touchdown, while running back Colby McDonald rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

The Terps' defense was dominant throughout the game. They held Virginia to just 265 total yards and forced three turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Linebacker Deon Jones led the defense with eight tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack. Cornerback Jakorian Bennett also had a strong game, recording two interceptions.

With the win, Maryland improves to 1-0 on the season. They will travel to West Virginia next Saturday for their second game of the season.

In the post-game press conference, Maryland head coach Mike Locksley praised his team's effort, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

"Our defense played lights out today," Locksley said. "They set the tone for the game and never let up."

Locksley also praised the performance of his offense, particularly Billy Edwards Jr. and Colby McDonald.

"Billy made some big plays for us today," Locksley said. "And Colby ran the ball really hard. He was a workhorse for us."

Maryland's victory over Virginia was a great way to start the season. The Terps showed that they have a strong defense and a balanced offense. They will be a team to watch in the Big Ten this season.
