Heavy Rain and Flooding Cause Damage in Austria

Clean-Up Efforts Underway After Thunderstorms Hit St. Anton

A severe thunderstorm has hit the Austrian ski resort village of St. Anton am Arlberg, causing extensive damage and sweeping away several vehicles. Clean-up efforts are now underway involving 350 people.

The storms hit on 19 August 2024, bringing heavy rain and hail. The village was flooded in places, and several roads were blocked by debris.

The flooding caused damage to buildings and infrastructure, and a number of vehicles were swept away by the floodwaters. No injuries have been reported.

The clean-up operation is expected to take several days. The Austrian Red Cross is providing assistance to those affected by the storms.

The storms are the latest in a series of severe weather events to hit Austria in recent weeks. Heavy rain and flooding have also caused damage in other parts of the country, including Vienna.

The Austrian Meteorological Service has warned that further thunderstorms are possible in the coming days.

Avalanches in Austrian Alps Kill at Least Six

In a separate incident, avalanches in the Austrian Alps have killed at least six people. The avalanches occurred on 18 August 2024, after heavy snowfall in the region.

The victims were all experienced skiers who were caught in the avalanches while off-piste skiing. The avalanches were triggered by a combination of heavy snow and strong winds.

The Austrian Alpine Club has warned skiers to be aware of the avalanche risk and to take all necessary precautions.
