Florida State Seminoles Football: A History of Success and Tradition
The Early Years
The Florida State Seminoles football program began in 1947, when the university decided to field a team in the newly created Dixie Conference. The team's first head coach was Don Veller, who led the Seminoles to a 5-4 record in their inaugural season. In 1950, the Seminoles joined the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and in 1957, they won their first SEC championship. The Seminoles continued to be a competitive team throughout the 1960s and 1970s, but they did not win another SEC championship until 1987.
The Bowden Era
In 1976, Bobby Bowden was hired as the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles football program. Bowden quickly turned the Seminoles into a national powerhouse, leading them to two national championships in 1993 and 1999. Bowden also won 12 ACC championships and coached 34 seasons at Florida State. In 2010, Bowden retired as the winningest coach in FBS history, with 389 career victories. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
The Jimbo Fisher Era
In 2010, Jimbo Fisher was hired as the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles football program. Fisher led the Seminoles to a national championship in 2013, and he won three ACC championships in his six seasons at the helm. In 2017, Fisher left Florida State to become the head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies.
The Willie Taggart Era
In 2017, Willie Taggart was hired as the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles football program. Taggart led the Seminoles to a 9-4 record in his first season, but he was fired after two seasons following a 5-7 record in 2018.
The Mike Norvell Era
In 2019, Mike Norvell was hired as the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles football program. Norvell led the Seminoles to a 3-6 record in his first season, but he improved the team's record to 5-7 in 2020. In 2021, the Seminoles finished 9-3 and won the Cheez-It Bowl.

The Florida State Seminoles football program is one of the most successful in the country. The Seminoles have won three national championships, 18 ACC championships, and they have appeared in 42 bowl games. The Seminoles are led by head coach Mike Norvell, and they play their home games at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.
