Harrison Shapiro Wins Prestigious Science Writing Award

MAE 22 Graduate Recognized for Cutting-Edge Research

Harrison Shapiro, a recent graduate of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) program, has been named the recipient of the 2022 Gregory T. Pope Prize for Science Writing.

Shapiro, who graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in MAE, was honored for his research paper titled "How Can America Stop Lawsuits for Derailing Self-Driving Cars?" The paper explores the legal challenges facing the development and deployment of self-driving vehicles. Shapiro's work is particularly timely, as legislators and policymakers grapple with the complex legal issues surrounding autonomous vehicles.

Shapiro was also a member of the Princeton Engineering Grand Challenge Scholars Program, which supports undergraduate research and leadership development. In addition to his academic accomplishments, Shapiro was also a dedicated advocate for student diversity and inclusion. He served as President of the Princeton Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and a member of the executive board of the University's chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Shapiro is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Transportation Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests include transportation systems modeling, intelligent transportation systems, and the impact of transportation on the environment.

Congratulations to Harrison Shapiro on this well-deserved honor!
