A Biennial Athletics Competition

The World Athletics Championships is a biennial athletics competition organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The competition was first held in 1983 and is held every two years. The championships are open to athletes from all over the world and are considered to be the most prestigious track and field event after the Olympic Games.

History

The World Athletics Championships were first held in Helsinki, Finland in 1983. The competition was originally known as the IAAF World Championships in Athletics and was held every four years. In 1995, the IAAF decided to change the competition to a biennial event and the first championships were held in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1995.
